How to redact a PDF offline (so the text is really gone)
A black rectangle drawn over text does not remove the text. Anyone can select it, copy it, or delete the rectangle — which is how court filings and government reports have leaked "redacted" names for years. Real redaction removes the words from the file.
Step by step
- Open the PDF in PDF Haven (drag it into the workspace).
- Choose Redact. Drag a box over anything you want gone.
- To find things automatically, type a name or number and click Mark all, or use the presets: Emails, Phone numbers, Card numbers, SSN, Amounts.
- Check each page — click a box and press Delete if it covers too much.
- Click Redact & download. Every page with a box is rebuilt as an image, so no text survives on it, and document info such as author and title is removed.
- PDF Haven re-opens the new file and shows the check: how many characters remain on the redacted pages (it should say 0) and whether your search term still appears anywhere.

Text inside a PDF is stored as drawing instructions with the letters attached. Cutting a few words out of those instructions safely is hard, and many tools get it wrong. Rebuilding the marked page as a picture of itself, with the black boxes already burned in, is the simple, verifiable way: there is no text left to find. Pages you did not mark stay exactly as they were — sharp and searchable.
Test any redacted PDF yourself
- Open the PDF and press Ctrl+A (⌘A on a Mac) on the redacted page, then copy and paste into a text editor. If the hidden words appear, the redaction failed.
- Use the viewer's search (Ctrl+F) for a word you redacted.
- Check File → Properties for the author name and title.

Why do it offline?
You redact a document because it holds something sensitive. Uploading it to a website to hide that information defeats the purpose. PDF Haven does the whole job inside your browser.
FAQ
- Is redaction free?
- Redaction is part of PDF Haven Pro. You can try it free for 7 days without entering a card.
- Will the redacted pages still be readable?
- Yes. They are rebuilt at 150, 200 or 300 dpi — you choose — so they look the same on screen and in print. Only the text can no longer be selected or searched.
- Does it work on scanned PDFs?
- Yes. Scans have no text to search, so draw the boxes by hand; the result is rebuilt the same way.
