Is my PDF redaction safe? A 2-minute check

Redaction failures are common: the black box is there, but the words underneath are too. Before you send a redacted PDF, run these checks.

Step by step

  1. Copy test: open the PDF, click on the redacted page, press Ctrl+A (⌘A) and copy. Paste into Notepad or TextEdit. If the hidden words show up, the redaction is not safe.
  2. Search test: press Ctrl+F (⌘F) and search for a name or number you redacted.
  3. Properties test: open File → Properties (or Document Properties) and look at Title, Author, Subject and Keywords — they often contain names.
  4. Layers and comments: some PDFs carry comments, form fields or attachments with the original data. Look at the viewer's side panels.

If it failed

Open the original (not the failed copy) in PDF Haven → Redact, mark the same areas and download again. Pages with boxes are rebuilt as images, document properties are cleared, and the app runs the copy and search tests on the result for you.

FAQ

Does a black highlight in a viewer count as redaction?
Usually not. Highlights and drawn rectangles are annotations on top of the text; the text remains in the file.
