Compress a PDF without uploading it
Most PDF compressors want the file on their server and then show a percentage after the fact. PDF Haven compresses locally and shows the real result before you download.
Step by step
- Open the PDF in PDF Haven and choose Compress.
- Pick Smart for documents with photos: it re-encodes the photos and leaves text as sharp, selectable text.
- Pick Strong for scans: it rebuilds each page as an optimised image.
- Choose a level — Smallest (screen), Balanced (e-mail) or High quality (print) — and click Compress.
- You see the actual sizes, e.g. "12.4 MB → 2.1 MB (−83%)". Click Download compressed PDF.

Add to Chrome — freeWhy some PDFs barely shrink
A PDF that is mostly text is already compact; there is nothing big to squeeze. When that happens PDF Haven tells you plainly instead of handing you a file that is the same size or bigger. Large PDFs are almost always large because of photos or scans — exactly what Smart and Strong target.
Which mode should I use?
| Your PDF | Use |
|---|---|
| Report or brochure with photos | Smart · Balanced |
| Scanned contract or receipts | Strong · Balanced |
| Needs to print well | Smart · High quality |
| E-mail limit is tiny (e.g. 2 MB) | Strong · Smallest |

FAQ
- Is compression free?
- Compression is part of PDF Haven Pro, with a 7-day free trial (no card).
- Will the text stay selectable?
- With Smart, yes — only photos change. Strong turns pages into images, so text is no longer selectable; the app tells you before you download.
